Project Background

New house with large garden, built on the site of an old school. Elements of the existing garden structure had to remain to keep the project affordable. The clients were looking for a new ‘adult zone’ in the garden, as well as planted areas to add interest to the endless lawned areas installed by the developer. The old school well was to be retained to become a focal point in the new garden. The front and rear garden areas had been professionally designed before Creating Eden were invited to quote for the landscaping work.

Landscaping Notes

The major landscaping works were centred in the rear garden, with only planting areas created in the front lawn. The design required the existing grass to be lifted from all but one of the 9 small raised lawn areas behind the house to create planting areas, a patio for a new summerhouse and outdoor seating, and a large gravel area containing a focal point tree and large raised herb bed.  This proved to be challenging as the garden had been created on top of the old school playground, which had to be excavated in the planting areas. Paved stepping stones now provide added interest to the existing gravel paths and a new sinuous sandstone sett path  through one of the new planting areas leads to the summerhouse. Two mirror backed black trellis panels were attached to the black stained boundary fence to throw light into a dark area of the garden outside the main living area of the house. Once the garden had been built, we helped the clients to plant the garden and laid a thick mulch of fine composted bark to all the borders as a finishing touch.

This garden was designed and planted by Belinda Macdonald from Shades of Green Garden Design (now retired).
