Project Background & Landscaping Notes

This holiday home garden sits in front of a converted stable block, high on a hill in north Fife, with lovely views over St Andrews bay. Some landscaping was in place but the clients wanted to add a sheltered dining area close to the house, a turning circle for the cars and plenty of planting areas to soften the hard landscaping. The garden was professionally designed and we were invited to provide an estimate for the landscaping works, which included extending the existing red sandstone retaining walls,  building a circular section ‘sunken’ deck and adding rendered concrete retaining walls and steps to the upper garden level. All the materials had been chosen to reflect the existing hardscapes on the site. Uplighters were added on the deck and up the steps, and a circular gravel parking area was installed in the centre of the upper level, partially screened from the house by planting, along with a flat lawn/putting green. The clients have now retired and spend much more time at the house, now that they have such a lovely garden to enjoy!

This garden was designed and planted by Belinda Macdonald from Shades of Green Garden Design (now retired).
